Aloha! I’m Amy Yamasaki and I’m so proud to be the incoming Artistic Director of the Puna Men’s Chorus! I have lived and worked here in Hilo for almost fifteen years, and the past months of getting to know the Puna Men’s Chorus have been some of the most fun.
I first heard the group sing at the Kilauea Military Camp Theater back when they were just getting started. Their rendition of “In This Very Room” brought me to tears of hope at a most challenging time in my life. Now that song is a core part of their repertoire and it never fails to renew my spirit.
This past April, I had the amazing opportunity to be a guest choral clinician at the PMC spring retreat where they rehearsed for their huge ExtrABBAganza show. Imagine my delight when I got to see the final show at Hilo’s Palace Theater. Glitz, glam, and choral technique all worked together to make a show that brought the audience to our feet. When I heard that Daron Scarborough, founding Artistic Director of the PMC, was going to be moving on, I knew that I wanted to apply for the position.
My education, my training, and my experience have all led me to where I am today. I have spent years conducting choirs and teaching voice. I have a private voice studio where I help singers find their voices and release their inner divas. I just launched my one-woman show, “Show Off”. And now, the Puna Men’s Chorus has welcomed me as their new Artistic Director starting in January 2011!
I have the feeling PMC won’t need my help with the releasing of their inner divas. But I’m happy they have welcomed me with open arms, hearts, and voices. I feel so honored and grateful to be a part of this exceptional group and look forward to our exciting plans for the upcoming year.

Aloha Amy!
From one of the chorus ‘newbies’ – I’m THRILLED knowing you’ll help us shine locally and globally! Globally? Yes! GALA in Denver, July 2012. Truly, a historical mile-marker for PMC!
I have had the pleasure of being acquainted with Amy since just after her arrival to live in Hilo. And I have worked some years with her in other choruses. I can guarantee every one of our guys will find her a very able replacement for Daron — she is just as much fun to work with, just as full of life and good spirit, and a wonderfully talented musician and singer.
Welcome aboard Amy!!

Amy, better watch what you ask for, you could end up releasing a whole buncha raging inner divas! A little late to say welcome aboard, but it’s being great to have you in the canoe and at the helm. Mahalo nui loa!
